Baby Skin Care

Is there anything more beautiful than a baby’s skin?

The warm sweetness of a newborn, the chubby smooth cheeks of an older baby, or the soft pudgy fingers of a toddler. There’s no doubt about it - little people have beautiful skin. However, just as all of us are prone to skin irritation from time to time, so are babies and children. Nappy rash, dry skin, and eczema are all skin conditions that are common among babies and young children, but they do not have to be left untreated.

Newborn babies, in particular, have very delicate and sensitive skin. After spending nine months in a perfectly controlled environment while they grow and develop, the outside world can be a harsh place to adjust to. Many of the chemicals and fragrances used in modern skincare, cleaning products, laundry products, and even in the manufacture of clothing, are harsh on a baby’s skin and can cause irritation, dryness, and rashes. When skin becomes dry and irritated rashes, and chafing can develop, which can result in the skin splitting and cracking. Because our skin is designed to be a very effective barrier between the harshness of the outside world, and our body’s carefully balanced inner world, when the skin becomes cracked and broken it can provide access for things such as bacteria, that can compromise our health. This is particularly significant for babies because, being so young, they have very fragile immune systems.

When taking care of your baby, there are some key things you can do that can help maintain healthy and supple skin, and avoid rashes and dryness. One is avoiding the temptation to bathe the baby every day. While they aren’t moving around, babies don’t get that dirty! Bathing too often can break down the natural oils in the skin and leave it prone to dryness. When skin becomes dry, it can be itchy and irritating and can begin to crack and split, which can lead to infection. Using an Original Konjac Sponge for bathing will be the best options for newborns. After bathing your baby pat their skin dry, rather than rubbing, and massage a baby balm into the skin while it is still damp, trapping in the moisture. Using a calming balm made from natural products, such as New Zealand White Beeswax, Shea Butter, Fractioned Coconut Oil, Lavender and Bergamot Essential Oils, will support healthy skin and work to prevent nappy rash and chafing. Using a baby balm with lavender essential oil can also be very calming for both mother and baby when it comes to supporting healthy sleep routines.

When choosing skin care products, all-natural baby products are the best. Without added chemicals and artificial fragrance, products that are natural will nurture and nourish even the youngest skin. Using a mum and baby balm can be a great alternative to traditional diaper cream. Mum and baby balm, made with shea butter, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, kawakawa infused oil, and lavender essential oil. It soothes and protects your baby’s skin. It is safe and easy to use with each diaper change, to help prevent and relieve diaper rash.

Some of the natural ingredients, and their benefits, that we use in our all-natural baby products are:

Beeswax - this has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties, which can help to avoid chapped skin and bacterial infections by forming a protective barrier that seals in moisture without smothering or clogging the pores.

Lavender oil - Lavender oil is anti-inflammatory and can soothe itchy and inflamed skin, as well as having a calming effect on the emotions and helping to support peaceful sleep.

Castor oil - an oil with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that protect skin from infection, as well as improving the softness and smoothness of the skin.

Extra Virgin Olive oil - this oil helps to retain moisture and soothe irritated skin.

Kawakawa - these leaves are traditionally used topically and are shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties.

Coconut oil - known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, as well as being an excellent moisturiser.

Shea butter - creates a barrier to seal in moisture, as well as aiding in protecting the skin against the effects of environmental toxins.

Aside from keeping your baby’s skin soft and supple, baby skin care products are wonderful to use for baby massage. Baby massage is a great way to relax and bond with your baby, as well as supporting their brain development through touch. It also helps the baby to learn about how the different parts of their body are connected. Our mum and baby balm is a wonderful choice for baby massage as it is a versatile and light whipped balm that is perfect for baby, as well as being great for mums skin too. Of course, you could select any other balm from our baby care range and use it daily to nurture and bond with your little one.
